Some thoughts on Psycho
Something occurred to me recently about the movie Psycho. In Psycho, Norman Bates is an avid taxidermist. He likes to preserve various animals to put on display in his private room at the motel. It occurred to me that the taxidermied animals are a substitute for something else. Norman Bates was based on Ed Gein, who decorated his house with artifacts made from preserved human remains. They were made from pieces of people he had either murdered or exhumed from graves. Other films that featured variations on the Ed Gein story kept the grotesqueries intact; Deranged, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silence of the Lambs, or even the more direct Ed Gein.
